Do I need a doctor's referral to see you?

In most cases NO.  For those patients with Medicare, Work Comp and patients seeking care after an auto accident are the exception.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Please bring your health insurance card, any physical therapy prescription from your referring physician and any recent X-Ray, MRI or other diagnostic studies that pertain to your injury. During the initial evaluation, your physical therapist will perform a full review of your history and assess any range of motion restrictions or muscle strength impairments apparent.

What should I expect at my therapy appointments?

Your first visit will include an initial evaluation and then a treatment. Depending on your needs, your treatment may consist of a variety of hands-on joint and soft tissue techniques, ultrasound, electronic stimulation, heat/cold therapy, exercise, resistance training, and stretching. Treatments are designed to increase motion and strength, reduce pain, restore function. Patients are often assigned an active exercise program at home or in the gym, and are educated in ways to speed recovery and prevent recurrence of the problem.

What should I wear to my appointment?

It is best to wear clothing and shoes that are appropriate for exercise. The clothing should either expose the area (i.e. wear shorts if you are being seen for a knee problem) or be loose fitting to easily expose the area that is being treated. You may be asked to put on a gown depending on where your pain or problem is located.

Can I choose to work with a specific physical therapist?

In certain instances, physicians or former patients may refer a patient to a specific therapist. In most cases, though, the administrative team at Walton Physical Therapy  pairs patients with a therapist based on the specific rehabilitation needs of the patient and scheduling availability.

How long are treatment sessions?

Physical therapy sessions generally last between an hour and an hour and a half.  The frequency and number of sessions will vary based on your needs.  A referring physician will often specify both frequency and the total number of visits when prescribing treatment, and your insurance may have set limits on treatment sessions.  We will develop a treatment plan to address your needs and integrate with your schedule.
